Affordable Housing
Affordable Housing is a major issue facing children and families in Washington County. To tackle this complicated problem, the Coalition has 3 strategies:
- To assure that families in Washington County have access to information about the 19 different low-income housing programs and other community resources available to them, the Coalition partnered with Crossroads Rhode Island and the RI Department of Human Services to update their database with Washington County resource information. Once implemented, we envision this web site will enable individuals and social service professionals in Washington County to access needed information about community resources, (including the capacity to download applications for services) from home, social service agencies, and public libraries.
- To address housing development needs, the Coalition partnered with the Washington County Regional Planning Council which had already established a Housing Advisory Subcommittee. Coalition members supported the WCRPC effort to successfully lobby the General Assembly, RI Housing and municipal funding sources to address affordable housing supply issues on a regional basis. This effort led to the development of a Regional Housing Strategy that reflects the specific needs and unique characteristics of Washington County. Since then, the WCRPC has supported the formation of the Washington County Community Development Corporation to pursue the development of affordable housing county-wide.
- To advocate on behalf of residents, the Coalition joined HousingWorks RI, a statewide coalition working to address RI's affordable housing crisis.
